A child's first trip to the barbershop is a milestone, and it sets the tone for every haircut after it. Done right, it is quick, calm, and maybe even fun. Here is how we recommend parents set it up for success.
Timing Is Everything
Schedule the cut when your child is rested and fed. A tired or hungry kid and a pair of clippers is a combination nobody wins. Mid-morning after breakfast is usually the sweet spot.
Talk It Up Beforehand
Kids fear what they do not understand. In the days before the visit:
- Explain what will happen in simple, positive terms
- Let them watch a parent or sibling get a cut first if possible
- Avoid words like "hurt" or even "it won't hurt" - it plants the idea
Keep the First Cut Simple
The first visit is about building trust, not executing a complex style. A simple, clean cut that takes 15 to 20 minutes is perfect. Elaborate fades can come later once the chair feels familiar.
Bring Reinforcements
A favorite toy, a snack for afterward, or a video on your phone can work wonders as a distraction. And yes - sitting on a parent's lap for the first cut is completely fine.
At Ventura Barber, kids' cuts are a regular part of what we do. We take our time, keep it light, and make sure your child leaves feeling like a big kid. Book a seat and bring the whole family.
